So I’ve been listening to Frederick Dodson’s Parallel Universes of Self lately and something keeps coming up for me that I want to talk about, because I think it’s one of those ideas that sounds abstract until it suddenly doesn’t, and then you can’t unsee it anywhere.
It’s the Law of Correspondence.
You’ve probably heard the phrase “as above, so below.” It gets quoted a lot in spiritual circles, usually on a nice font over a moody background, which kind of drains it of its actual power. Because underneath the aesthetic, this principle is one of the most practically useful things I’ve ever come across. And when you put it together with the idea of parallel realities, something clicks into place that changes how you understand pretty much everything that’s happening in your life right now.
Let me explain what I mean.
What the Law of Correspondence actually is
At its simplest, the Law of Correspondence says this: your outer world corresponds to your inner world. Always. Without exception.
Not as punishment. Not as reward. Not because the universe is keeping score or because you deserve what you’re getting or don’t deserve something better. Just as reflection. The way a mirror reflects without judgment, without preference, without doing anything except showing you exactly what’s standing in front of it.
Whatever is happening in your external reality, your relationships, your finances, your work, the quality of your daily experience, the kinds of people and situations that keep showing up, all of it is corresponding to something in your inner world. A belief, a frequency, a dominant emotional state, a story you’ve been running so long it just feels like facts about life.
This is genuinely good news, even though I know it might not immediately feel like it. Because if your outer world is a reflection of your inner world, that means changing your outer world doesn’t start with pushing harder at external circumstances. It starts inside. Which is somewhere you actually have access to.
The parallel universe piece
Now here’s where Frederick Dodson’s framework makes this even more interesting, and honestly a bit mind-bending in the best way.
The idea in Parallel Universes of Self is that every possible version of your life already exists. Not as a future thing you’re working toward, but as a present reality running in parallel to the one you’re currently experiencing. The version of you with the thriving creative work, the version of you with the relationship that feels easy, the version of you who woke up this morning feeling genuinely good about where things are, all of those are real. They exist. Right now. In parallel.
The question isn’t how do you create those realities. The question is how do you tune to them. How do you shift from the version of reality you’re currently in to the one that corresponds more closely to who you actually are and what you’re actually here to experience.
And the answer, beautifully, is correspondence. You shift your inner world to match the frequency of the reality you want to inhabit, and then, because of the Law of Correspondence, your outer world has no choice but to begin reflecting that back. Not immediately, not always dramatically, but reliably. Consistently. Because that’s how it works. The outer always corresponds to the inner. Always.
Your life right now is a perfect readout
Here’s the part that I find simultaneously confronting and deeply useful. If you want to know what’s running in your inner world right now, you don’t need to meditate for an hour or do a deep dive into your subconscious. You can just look around.
What do your relationships feel like? What’s the quality of them? What kinds of dynamics keep showing up? What do your finances correspond to in terms of your beliefs about abundance, your sense of worthiness, your relationship with receiving? What does your physical environment look like? Not in a judgy way, just as data. What does the overall texture of your daily life feel like?
All of it is information. All of it is your inner world, made visible.
Now, the important thing here, and I want to be really clear about this because this is where the Law of Correspondence gets misused, is that this isn’t about blame. If your life isn’t where you want it to be, that doesn’t mean you’re bad or wrong or have failed at being conscious. It just means there’s a correspondence running that you probably weren’t aware of. Probably something that got wired in early, a belief absorbed before you were old enough to question it, a story that became so familiar it stopped feeling like a story and started feeling like reality.
The Law of Correspondence doesn’t judge the reflection. It just shows it to you. What you do with that information is where the real work begins.
How you actually use this
So practically, what does it look like to work with the Law of Correspondence rather than just understand it conceptually?
Start by getting genuinely curious about what’s reflecting back. Pick one area of your life that isn’t working the way you want it to. Not to beat yourself up about it, just to get interested in it. What does this situation correspond to? What belief would have to be true for this to make sense as a reflection? Sometimes this is uncomfortable. Sometimes it’s also kind of fascinating.
Find the version of you who already has what you’re reaching for. This is the parallel universe piece made practical. That version of you exists. Right now. Running in a parallel reality where the circumstances are different because the inner world is different. What does that version of you believe? How do they feel when they wake up in the morning? What’s their relationship to the thing you’re currently struggling with? Spend time inhabiting that version of yourself, not as fantasy, but as a genuine frequency shift. Feel what it feels like. Let your body know that state.
Notice what changes when you change. This is the part that makes the law feel real rather than theoretical. When you genuinely shift something internally, even subtly, something in your external world will correspond to it. Maybe not dramatically, maybe not immediately, but something will shift. Pay attention. The correspondence works in both directions, and when you start noticing the outer world reflecting your inner shifts, it becomes genuinely hard to go back to thinking these things are unrelated.
Be patient with the lag. Physical reality has a lag. Your inner world can shift in a moment but your outer circumstances take time to catch up. This is where most people give up, they make an inner shift and then check the external world too quickly, see nothing has changed yet, and conclude it didn’t work. It worked. The correspondence is in process. Give it time to show up in form.
The version of you that’s already there
Here’s what I keep coming back to with all of this. Somewhere, in a parallel version of your life, a you that has already made the inner shift is living the outer reality you’re reaching for. That’s not a comforting fiction. If the model is right, it’s literally true.
And the Law of Correspondence is the mechanism that connects you to that version of yourself. Not through force, not through pushing, not through making things happen in the external world. Through becoming, internally, the version of you that corresponds to the reality you want to inhabit.
As within, so without. As above, so below.
It was always this simple. It was just never easy.
